We started in the wind tunnel with a baseline run with the model as the car had raced in Monaco. Then we carefully marked up the place to make the first big cut, and using a hacksaw (literally) cut the front wing end plate extensions off the model. Test result – 17% less downforce, much of it off the front of the car. Then we took the hacksaw to the diffuser. A further 15% loss, much of it at the rear of the car. Balance pretty much back to normal. 32% less downforce was going to mean MUCH slower lap times. Then we got to work! By the Friday, we managed to recover from a 32% loss to “just” a 15% loss. Probably 2 seconds per lap recovered in that week using aluminium, wood and plastic card and lots of adhesive tape and glue. The final configuration was then fabricated and wet laminated (*) via modifications made, some at the circuit. Drawings were faxed from the wind tunnel and phone calls made to ensure we had the ability to make what we were inventing.
