Sebastian Vettel had some interesting remarks to make last night, on both the competitiveness of Ferrari's SF15-T and where they stand relative to Mercedes:

"If I had to pinpoint one thing, I’d rather be a bit quicker, but it’s difficult to evaluate how quick we are, because some people tried more of a qualifying trim and others did less so. I never drove the 2014 Ferrari, but I think this one it’s a massive step forward.

"That doesn’t mean that we are satisfied as it’s clear that if you want to win, you have to beat Mercedes. It’s exciting to see what’s going on behind them, which I think it’s not clear judging from the lap times we’ve seen so far."

The performance of Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen in testing has impressed Sky Sports F1’s David Croft after observing first hand at the Circuit de Catalunya:

ā€œVerstappen really looked on it out on the track and there was a marked difference in his driving compared with Carlos Sainz when I was watching them. The team are really happy with Verstappen.

ā€œMaybe for Max Verstappen his weakness is in feedback and at the age of 17 being quite a young man and not quite having the confidence to give the feedback that they want. But they are working on that and say that that is getting better day by day. His race craft, well they are very happy with the way that he is performing out on the track and they think he is going to be an absolute sensation out on track.ā€

As for the STR10 itself:

ā€œI am told we are now seeing the real Toro Rosso at this test and it is a totally revised car. Completely new aero package, new floor, new rear, new difusser – everything has changed from a base car at the first two tests that was there for systems checks and to make sure the reliability of the powerunit was right and now they are putting on the aero to it."

With Magnussen deputising for Alonso today after the Spaniard's crash in the previous test, we asked Jenson Button last night what impact the Dane would have on McLaren's development given he hadn't driven the MP4-30 before:

ā€œKevin has always been very good at jumping in the car and getting to grips with it very quickly – I think that is something we found when he first jumped into a Formula 1 car – so it shouldn’t be an issue. To be fair it is always nice having as many views as you can from experienced drivers, it is a shame that Fernando isn’t here to be able to do mileage for himself, but also for me as it is always good to have information from different parties.

"So it is good that Kevin is in the car and I think that it will be interesting to hear his comments and I will be listening in to what he has to say because he is driving the car in a pretty good state, whereas I jumped in the car at the first test and we have come a long way since then so it will interesting to how he compares it to what he last drove in Abu Dhabi.ā€

Rivals spooked by Mercedes' pace

Mercedes’ faltering rivals have hailed the world champions’ new car as ā€œunbelievably quickā€ with the Silver Arrows’ domination of F1 set to continue at the start of the 2015 season.

Nico Rosberg’s lap of 1:22.792 set on Friday at Barcelona when the W06 ran with soft tyres for the first time this winter was in excess of half a second clear of the field’s previous best effort, recorded by Felipe Massa’s Williams on the first day of the final pre-season test at the Circuit de Catalunya.

ā€œThey are unbelievably quick,ā€ acknowledged McLaren’s Jenson Button. ā€œIt is all a guessing game and the only thing you can look at are the long runs and the Mercedes is miles in front it seems on the long runs.ā€

Despite improvements from Ferrari and Williams between seasons, paddock insiders suspect Mercedes may be one second clear of the chasing pack when the new campaign begins on March 15 in Melbourne.

ā€œI’d rather be a bit quicker, but it’s difficult to evaluate how quick we are because some people tried more of a qualifying trim and others did less so. I never drove the 2014 Ferrari, but I think this one it’s a massive step forward,ā€ Sebastian Vettel told Sky Italia on Friday.

ā€œIt’s clear that if you want to win, you have to beat Mercedes. It’s exciting to see what’s going on behind them, which I think it’s not clear judging from the lap times we’ve seen so far."

Former behemoths Red Bull are thought to have been left lagging by an under-powered Renault engine while McLaren have endured a problematic winter following their reunion with Honda.

ā€œThey [Mercedes]'ve been running relatively conservatively throughout the testing, but have obviously just started to wind it up a bit and you can see the performance gap is pretty ominous," Red Bull boss Christian Horner told Sky Sports News HQ. "Everybody looks pretty tight behind them, but they seem to have quite a gap at the moment."

Lotus believe they may start the 2015 season as the fifth-fastest team – behind Mercedes, Williams, Ferrari and Red Bull - after switching to Mercedes power following McLaren’s defection.

The McLaren has impressed trackside observers whenever it has run over the winter but the MP4-30’s chronic unreliability both in Jerez and Barcelona makes it unlikely it will finish the Melbourne curtain-raiser. ā€œWe are not going to have a race-winning car at the first race, but we might have one at the last race,ā€ Button told reporters last week

Red Bull have already indicated that Renault will delay the bulk of their engine upgrade ā€˜tokens’ until later in the year, while Ferrari plan to introduce a series of improvements to their SF15-T car throughout the opening races.

But ominously for the chasing pack, Mercedes themselves still have more pace up their sleeves. Despite his jaw-dropping lap time on Friday, an unhappy Rosberg said he was still yet to find his new car’s sweet spot.

Marcus Ericsson has just done a stint on the medium tyres. The Sauber driver did these lap times: 1:28.8, 1:29.2, 1:29.1, 1:29.2, 1:29.3, 1:29.2, 1:29.1, 1:29.1, 1:29.3 and 1:29.6.

Čini se da Force Indiji i ne ide tako loÅ”e... Evo 50 krugova za dva i po sata, viÅ”e nego solidno. Ali i dalje bi u Melbourneu mogli biti miljama daleko od ostalih. Prava Å”teta Å”to nisu mogli isporučiti bolid ne vrijeme.

"McLaren is running the Melbourne-spec Honda engine today, according to sources."

It is understood the Honda engine has been running at a limited capacity in testing so far, so this may indicate the unit is at 100% power today. Of course, only McLaren and Honda know the truth!

Williams is looking for the ultimate pace of the FW37. The outfit from Grove has put Felipe Massa on the supersoft and he did a 1:23.262. A fast time, but not as fast as Nico Rosberg yesterday.

E ovo bi moglo biti značajno od McH , dosta brzo vrijeme na softu izuzmemo li očekivanja nakon svega Å”to se izdeÅ”avalo, dodaj na to da Fernando može ovo spustiti joÅ”, znači mogu i na 1:24 na softu, kao i Ferrari i Williams... sad sam i ja iznenađen prijatno...
