Final thoughts on Seb Vettel and the end of a love, the one between him and Ferrari.
In a sense, everything was already planned.
In another geological epoch, summer 2018, Sergio Marchionne's agony in progress, Seb publicly said (perhaps you remember) that he would have preferred to keep Kimi for another twelve months, adding that Leclerc would not have hurt another year in Alfa.
They did not listen to him (if he is interested, in my opinion, who are also Raikkonian, they did well not to listen to him) and from there it was clear that Seb in Maranello was no longer seen as an undisputed and indisputable leader. I wondered then: but could such a thing have happened to Schumi, such as "I want to keep Irvine" and instead Todt would bring another one into his house?
No.
It is understood that the current conclusions weighed on the events, on and off the track, of 2019. Carletto showed great things and persuaded the ownership of something that we will have to verify: he is The Chosen One, the Predestined.
They don't make you a contract until 2024 (and they put your little brother in the Academy too, huh) if they don't blindly believe in you. From John Elkann to Camilleri, passing through Binotto, the true architect of the final solution.
Binotto is a guy who eats goodness from all claws.
Given the chaos of the pandemic, he would not have been sorry to freeze the present, that is Vettel-Leclerc, until the end of 2021, when he will still race with the current rules. But Seb asked for a long-term commitment, also because he doesn't think he is scarcer than Carletto at all and therefore he wanted to play it on an equal footing. Without short-term expiry date, like mozzarella.
It was, inevitably, a dialogue between the deaf. Love was no longer there, there could still be mutual interest but a separation had at least the merit of safeguarding the beautiful memories, which also exist.
And here I come to Binotto which is booming with all the claws.
Having always been there, the historical data does not escape the team principal.
Alonso plus Vettel.
2010-2020.
Zero titulas.
And it wasn't Fernando's fault and it wasn't Seb's fault. In the sense that between 2010 and 2020 Ferrari never produced a dominant single-seater. Sometimes he had a winning but never dominant car.
Now, a generation has passed, between 2010 and 2020. Between Alonso and Vettel, there are presidents, team principals, technical directors, engineers. A giant blender took no prisoners. Go and read the list, from Allison and Arrivabene's "A" to What is happening here, that is, what the hell is happening here, indeed it has already happened in Maranello, if we smoked Alonso and Vettel and we start from Sainz (of which I will deal with soon, Carlitos doesn't mind me) next to Carletto, total less than ten podiums in two?
Maybe it happened, let me hope !, that the champion's alibi at the wheel as a guarantee of success has finally been exposed. Or maybe not (there are already signs ...) if they soon fall into Ferrari in the mantra of "but Leclerc is a phenomenon and he will take care of it".
Schumi was a phenomenon, but in 2005 they doubled it.
Last thing, only on Seb.
I like him as a driver and as a man. I know how much he wanted to win in Rosso and I know he has done everything. He will long regret the summer of 2018 and my gratitude goes to him.
Destiny is not always kind to beautiful people.
