Nikita Mazepin, third in the finish line to today’s main race, received two penalties of five seconds after the race, which puts him in ninth place.
Mazepin spent the entire race at the very top in a fight with Yuki Tsunod and Felipe Drugovich, but in the last few laps he overdid it with aggression.
He earned his first five-second penalty for an incident in which it initially seemed Tsunoda could get a penalty. Mazepin pushed Tsunoda off the track as he took the lead in Turn 1, and after the race it was announced that Tsunoda was under investigation.
The judges, however, concluded that the Japanese had placed the car close enough to Mazepin before his aggressive defense, so they ruled that Tsunoda, had not been pushed out illegally by Mazepin, would have moved forward within the boundaries of the track.
The same defensive move in the same place cost him other time penalties - the Russian pushed Felipe Drugovich in the same way, who in that situation had to release the gas in order not to end up in the wall next to the start-finish plane.
Mazepin was under investigation for two more incidents with Drugovich, but was not punished for it. In the first incident, Mazepin hit Drugovic in corner 1, causing the Brazilian to lose his position, but he returned it to the end of the round and was not penalized. The last incident was the one on the route between turns 3 and 4, where Drugovich blew up Pirelli's advertisement, but it was estimated that Mazepin was very aggressive, but not in violation.
In addition to time penalties, Mazepin also received two penalty points, which puts him at 11 points in total, until the ban on appearances.
The last race of the season will take place tomorrow at 13:20, and Mick Schumacher and Callum Ilott will fight for the title. Schumacher will start third and Ilott fourth.
