Robert Kubica got a new opportunity to drive in a Formula 1 car in the first free practice for the Bahrain GP, which is scheduled for this weekend. His last appearance in the race was just under a year ago in a Williams team car. He is not active as a driver this year, but has been hired as a reserve driver for the Alfa Romeo team.
As a backup driver, however, this is not the first time this season that he has replaced one of Alfa Romeo’s current drivers. Namely, he was already a replacement in the first free practice at the Red Bull Ring, Hungaroring and Silverstone.
"I am very pleased to have returned to the driver's seat for the first time since August."
"My season was busy with simulation work in the factory and my DTM program."
“Now that my DTM season is over, I want to return to my role in Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN full time. There is still a lot to fight for and I am convinced that my work will make a positive contribution to the team's efforts. "Robert Kubica
The Alfa Romeo team is currently in eighth place in the World Constructors Championship, with a total of eight points. Team director Frederic Vasseur said the following about Kubica as a replacement:
"We're all glad to see Robert get back in the car during his first free practice."
"His contribution to the team has been important this season and being able to make the most of his experience and skills here in Bahrain will help the team continue its current path of advancement."
"Sakhir is a trail he knows very well and this will really help our work this weekend."Frederic Vasseur
